16 million Euros are to be invested in Yllas over the next two years.  Investment will be targeted for new lifts and ticket system for the Yllas ski resorts.

The funding will be divided between Äkäslompolo village on the  northern side of Ylläs fell and Ylläsjärvi village, situated on southern side.

Pertti Yliniemi, the Concern President of Lapland Hotels is quoted as saying,

“I’d like to commend the Ministry of Trade and Industry for focusing the investment allowance. Ylläs is a very considerable travelling centre, now the development is getting total new speed”

“Now we have to get the decision-makers of the municipality of Kolari to involve the development of Ylläs. We hope the municipality of Kolari will quickly begin the planning of this area and that the development will now gather speed..."

Praising Yllas, Mr Yliniemi stated that the resort has the highest ski slopes (in Finland), fabulous scenery and a wide network of cross country ski tracks.

Detailed development plans are not likely to be released until later this year, but the paper reports that it is believed that development will include new slopes, a chair lift and upgraded hotels and restaurants.
